Saints, Colts prep for 'super' game

It's Super Bowl time, folks, and we all know what the city of New Orleans is going through right now.

It was only four Supers ago that Seattle and the Pacific Northwest were going crazy as the Seattle Seahawks were in the Super Bowl for the very first time.

Fans were trying to get on any last-minute flights to Detroit to see the Seahawks battle the Pittsburgh Steelers. I remember the parties, the hoopla, the extended Seattle-area television coverage and then the sad loss to the Steelers, 21-10 and, to this day, Hawk fans feel the referees gave the game to the Steelers.

The first Super Bowl for the Saints, folks, a team started in 1967 with some no-name coaches since then such as Tom Fears, J.D. Roberts and John North, but they have had some great coaches in Hank Stram, Dick Nolan, Bum Phillips, Wade Phillips, Mike Ditka, Jim Haslett and Jim Mora. Yes, Jim Mora from 1986-1996, but that was the elder Mora.

I'm glad the Saints are in finally after all that team has gone through, the losing seasons where fans put paper sacks on their heads so they wouldn't have to watch the games and the Louisiana Superdome chaos.

The Indianapolis Colts are back in after Peyton Manning was MVP of Super Bowl 41 as the Colts downed Chicago 29-17.

The Indy/Baltimore franchise is 2-1 in Super Bowls and being back in the main event in four years is a tribute to that franchise and its stability.

Interest

In bygone years, Super Bowl parties and get-togethers were the rule of thumb and planning went into those events for months. It was nonstop eating and drinking at various homes from noon until after the game ended.

Most lounges and taverns had their own versions of Super Bowl parties with snacks and entertainment. Many of those have gone by the wayside, although there are still good-sized events.

After several years, I will be hosting a party at the Red Lion in Port Angeles and I would assume that the majority of those attending will be rooting for the underdog Saints.

This one-day event draws more television fans than almost any other program. Seems like everything shuts down for about four hours when the game is on. Supermarkets become empty, gas stations have no customers, phones are quiet.

If the crowd watching is anywhere as large as those who watched the two championship games, this one will be huge.

The two title games drew an average of 52.9 million viewers, up 34 percent from a year ago. The 57.9 million watching the Colts and Vikings was the most watched non-Super Bowl program since the series finale of "Seinfeld" 12 years ago.

The pick

I was right on with the two championship games and defense usually decides the Super Bowl.

Manning and the Colts can chew up a defense better then any other team and the offense will be healthy with a lot of big-time players we never have heard of, being we don't get day-to-day coverage on the West Coast.

Drew Brees is a quarterback who can make things happen and he can move the football.

Both teams have trouble running the football, but the Colts come at you swiftly with a no-huddle offense designed to tire out a defense and not allowing the defense to load up with special personnel on certain key downs.

The Colts showed they could come from behind and I like them to win this one ... maybe 28-24.

The trivia

The coin to be used at the toss to start the game will be from outer space. The coin was carried aboard the shuttle Atlantis on a recent mission to the International Space Station.

The astronauts also carried a football with all the names of those in the Hall of Fame and that was sent to Canton in Ohio last week.
