Christmas has come and gone, the jolly old gent is back at the North Pole working on next year’s toys and it’s time to revisit the college football bowl games and pick some winners for you.
What’s my record so far? It’s 4-3, not counting Dec. 26 games. Little did I think Navy would crumble and Fresno State laid a big egg but, alas, maybe I can do better the rest of the way.
The appetizers
Dec. 29
A plethora of action today. I’ll take Maryland over East Carolina in the Military Bowl, Illinois to beat Baylor in the Texas and Oklahoma State to topple Arizona in the Alamo.
By the way, the Military is in Washington, D.C., at 11:30 a.m. today.
Dec. 30
It’s SMU versus Army in the Armed Forces Bowl. After what Navy did to Army, not sure I should pick the Cadets but I will anyway.
I like Kansas State over Syracuse in the Pinstripe Bowl in Yankee Stadium and Tennessee to beat North Carolina in the Music City.
As for the Holiday Bowl, what were Holiday officials drinking when they chose Nebraska to face the Washington Huskies in San Diego? I watched the Cornhuskers demolish Washington at Husky Stadium and remarked that it was like men against boys.
Nebraska had trouble mid-season when their quarterback went down but he is back and I cannot pick Washington, even though I’ll be rooting for a big upset.
Dec. 31
Take Clemson to knock off Florida in the Meineke Bowl, Notre Dame to beat Miami in the Sun, Georgia over Central Florida in the Liberty and South Carolina over Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Memphis.
Jan. 1
It’s nurse that New Year’s Eve hangover time with six games to tire out the old eyes.
With a 9 a.m. start, take Texas Tech over Northwestern in the Ticket City Bowl in Dallas. Michigan State will upset Alabama in the Capital One, Michigan over Mississippi State in the Gator, Wisconsin over Texas Christian in the Rose and Oklahoma over Connecticut in the Fiesta (I can’t see Tempe fans getting excited over this one).
The entrees
I have to root for Stanford over Virginia Tech in the Orange on Jan. 3. Then it’s Ohio State over Arkansas on Jan. 4 in the Sugar, Middle Tennessee over Miami of Ohio in the GoDaddy.com on Jan. 6 and LSU to beat Texas A&M in the Jan. 7 Cotton Bowl.Pick Pittsburgh over Kentucky in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham on Jan. 8 and Nevada over Boston College in the Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco on Jan. 9.
The BCS final: As much as I dislike Oregon because of their awful selection of uniforms and their brashness, I think they will beat Auburn on Jan. 10 in Glendale.
This contest could be a high-scoring affair but look for each team to come up with some sort of defensive scheme to keep the other team’s offense off the field.
By this time, however, college football fans, even the most rabid, will be tired of football.
