"Longitude" by Dava Sobel will be discussed by the Reading PALS book discussion group at 6:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 28, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

"During the great age of exploration, 'the longitude problem' was the gravest of scientific challenges. Lacking the ability to determine their longitude, sailors were literally lost at sea.

"In 1714, England's Parliament offered a huge reward to anyone whose method of measuring longitude could be proven successful. One man, John Harrison, dared to imagine a mechanical solution - a clock that would keep precise time at sea.

"'Longitude' is the dramatic human story of an epic scientific quest and of Harrison's 40-year obsession with building his perfect timekeeper, known today as the chronometer (excerpted from the book jacket)."

Copies of "Longitude" are available for check-out at the library.

Reading selections for future discussions will be on the agenda for the April 28 session. Preregistration is not required and drop-ins are welcome.

For more information, go to www.nols.org and click on "Events" or contact the library at 417-8500.
