Homeschool group puts on 'Emma'

The Northwinds Homeschool Band performs the nonmusical stage production of Jane Austen's "Emma," written by award-winning author Sandra Fenichel Asher, in June at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse.
The production will be a fundraiser for the band as it prepares to travel in the spring of 2011 to Washington, D.C., where it will perform at a music festival.
The play runs at 7 p.m. June 11-12, 15, 18-19 and at 2 p.m. June 13, 20.
At the start of the year, the teenagers took a linguistics course written by Paul Meier and taught by Dan Tutton, who also is the Northwinds Homeschool Band director. The cast of "Emma" will be performing in the "Proper British Respectable" accent, as the drama is set in Highbury, England, in 1814.
A dialogue-heavy script, "Emma," is sure to bring to life the essence of English country living during the Regency Era - the early 1800s.
Director Peggy Roedell chose this play because of (the) "richness of dialogue, the depth of story and beauty of Jane Austen's work."
Erin Henninger, of Sequim, cast as Emma, has studied not only her script but Austen and her writings, to be able to portray Emma Woodhouse as accurately as possible.
Actor Jeremy Fodge, of Port Angeles, portrays Mr. Knightley, the fondest and most beloved friend to Emma. She, an unlikely heroine, strives to better the life of Harriet Smith, played by Kare White, yet winds up getting her own heart entangled in the web.
Tickets are available at Port Book and News in Port Angeles, Pacific Mist Books in Sequim, and at the door at Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd., on performance nights. Doors open 30 minutes before showings and seating is limited.
Proceeds benefit scholarships for band, instrument repairs, music for community performances and the upcoming trip to Washington, D.C.
