Northwest Sampler Guild is presenting its replica of the 1875 Charlotte Clayton Sampler to the Jefferson County Historical Society at 12:45 p.m. Friday, June 11, in The Commons lobby at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

The original sampler was charted by the guild and recreated through the efforts of 23 members. The guild is holding its annual retreat and meeting from June 10-13 at Fort Worden.

Charlotte Clayton stitched her sampler while living at Devonlea House, Devonside, Tillicoutry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland, about 1875.

Details are sketchy, but it's known the sampler traveled with the family through Canada and eventually found its way into Washington. Catherine (Clayton) Chubb, also born in Scotland, is a paternal niece of Clayton.

Chubb, a longtime resident of Port Townsend, donated the sampler to the Commanding Officer's Quarters Museum at Fort Worden several months before her death in 1984.

The sampler has been professionally conserved and is displayed in a prominent location at the museum.

Bill Tennent, director of the Jefferson County Historical Society, and Steve Shively, representing Fort Worden, are accepting the guild's sampler.

Both the original and the replica will be on hand for the ceremonies.

Chart packs of the Charlotte Clayton Sampler are on sale at the museum.
