At the library

? The Sequim Library will be part of Sequim's First Friday Art Walk when it features artist Robert Lee at an after-hours reception from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, at the library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Lee's work will be on display, light refreshments will be available and live jazz music will be performed from 5:30-7:30 p.m. by Chez Jazz, a local group featuring vocalist Sarah Shea, Al Harris on keyboard and Ted Enderle on bass.

Limited library services will be available during the after-hours reception.

Lee has been drawing and painting since grade school in northeastern Kansas. He studied art at the University of Kansas and continued to paint as a hobby throughout a career that gave him travel opportunities to many parts of the United States and abroad.

Lee said watercolors are his favorite medium, landscapes his favorite subject and traditional his approach. He admires early watercolorists J.M.W. Turner and Francis Towne, and contemporary artist Ted Kautzky, as well as the artists of the California School of Watercolor for their spontaneous and adventurous technique. Early schooling in drafting, constructive drawing and architecture contributed to his eye for detail.

His paintings will be on display through January.

? "The Things They Carried," by Tim O'Brien, will be discussed at 3 p.m, Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Something between a novel and a short story collection, this award-winner is at once a superbly written war story and much more. Through the prism of the Vietnam War era, O'Brien explores the issues of courage, fear, memory and truth.

Multiple copies of the book are available at the library and can be requested online through the library catalog at www.nols.org.

Preregistration for this program is not required and drop-ins are welcome.
