Wildlife advocate speaks in Sequim

Readers Theatre Plus organizers are persistent.
Last January, they arranged for Dr. Jode Garbe, an expert on wildlife in Rwanda and sustainable development, to entertain and educate local theatergoers. However, Mother Nature intervened with a hefty snowstorm, causing her visit to be postponed until 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road.
Garbe, a Pacific Northwest resident, talks about her experience establishing a gorilla sanctuary in Rwanda.
During the discussion, local residents Jim and Carol Dries briefly share their experiences on a recent trip to see mountain gorillas.
Garbe also discusses sustainable development solutions for building environmental consciousness through education, positive conservation experiences and green economic empowerment.
Currently, Garbe is developing a Rwanda Wildlife Sanctuary and Science Education Center. She said its goals include housing rescued wildlife that was illegally captured and confiscated. It also will promote the continued protection of endangered mountain gorillas.
A major part of the center is designed to support local agricultural improvement, some components of which are organic dairy processing and farming, goat husbandry, hygiene and empowering traditionally disadvantaged groups such as women and the disabled.
Free tickets are available at Pacific Mist Books in Sequim and Odyssey Bookstore in Port Angeles. Attendees are encouraged to get their tickets in advance and arrive at the schoolhouse no later than 15 minutes before show time.

Readers Theatre Plus also presents “The Last Lifeboat” for three showings at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, and 3 p.m. Saturday-Sunday April 28-29 at the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse.
