On March 17, 1919, in Paris, a group of World War I veterans met and wrote a one-sentence statement of the purpose of the new organization. Elements of that paragraph would later shape the Preamble to The American Legion Constitution.

The American Legion has a program that simulates the Washington State government. You build a government from the ground up — cities, counties, political parties, courts, a legislature and even elect a governor.

 

The goals of the program are to develop civic leadership and pride in young American citizenship; to arouse a keen interest in the detailed study of our government; to develop an understanding of American traditions and belief in the United States of America; to arouse in young citizens a determination to maintain our form of government; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation; and, finally, to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy.

 

Evergreen Boys State is open to young men who have just completed their junior year of high school. It takes place at Central Washington University in Ellensburg from June 17-23.

On Feb. 15, Gov. Gregoire signed a document directed to her executive cabinet and small agency cabinet with the subject: “Hire A Veteran.” In it the governor urges these cabinets to look to the pool of talented veterans and gives them resources to go to for assistance in hiring veterans. This is great!

Thanks for the technology

The Fleet Reserve Association Service Officers would like to thank the Sequim PC Users Group (SPCUG) for donating a computer to their Port Angeles office so they can continue to help veterans with their claims in Clallam County.

 

At the first of February their computer had a major hard drive crash, but thankfully no information was lost that was backed up.

 

The branch will be holding its April 7 meeting at 1100 hours at the Coast Guard Chief’s Hut at the CG Station in Port Angeles.
