A routine traffic stop resulted in a multitude of charges on Jan. 9.

At approximately 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, a Sequim Police officer noticed Jonathan Black, 18, of Sequim, driving on West Washington Street. Black was wanted on a bench warrant for a probation violation. The officer stopped Black in the parking lot of the Safeway gas station. In the passenger seat of Black’s car was a 16-year-old girl, who was arrested after she was found in possession of marijuana. Detectives of the Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team arrived after receiving information that Black had two firearms in the vehicle. After obtaining a search warrant for the vehicle, officers found Black was in possession of a .22 caliber semi-automatic pistol, .22 caliber ammunition, a 12 gauge Remington 870 shotgun, shotgun shells, marijuana packaged into small baggies, a scale and a glass pipe containing methamphetamine residue. The marijuana and pistol were found in Black’s glove box.

Black was arrested and taken into custody, then to the Clallam County Corrections Facility where he was interviewed and charged with possession of a controlled substance with the intent to deliver, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a pistol by a person age 18 to 21.

During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that another case — in which Black was one of the suspects — needed to be referred for prosecution. In that case, dating back to Nov. 9, 2006, a juvenile who was arrested for possessing a handgun reported to police that it was Black who had sold him the gun. Further investigation revealed that the gun had been stolen from a car in the Solmar area west of Sequim. Black was additionally charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and unlawful delivery of a firearm to an ineligible person.
