A Port Angeles native and a California transplant joined Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict’s office last week.

Shane Martin, 22, of Port Angeles, became the newest addition to the department, taking the role of a patrol deputy April 11. Martin is scheduled to attend the 5.5-month Basic Law Enforcement Academy in Burien this month. Once he returns to the area, the sheriff’s office will assign Martin to a secondary three-month field training program, where he will work as a deputy together with training officers from the department.

Martin graduated from Port Angeles High School in 2003. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of sergeant, and was an artillery section chief while serving two tours in Iraq.

Benedict also swore in Sandra Waterhouse to the position of corrections deputy. She will undergo training within the Clallam County Correctional Facility and attend a Basic Correctional Officer Academy in Burien in the near future.

A native Californian, Waterhouse arrived in Port Angeles several years ago when she was assigned to the Ediz Hook Coast Guard Station. She spent nine years as an active duty Coast Guard member and is the wife of active Clallam County Sheriff’s deputy Jeff Waterhouse.
