Clallam County Tobacco Prevention & Control Program conducts routine compliance checks of licensed tobacco retailers to ensure that tobacco products stay out of the hands of our youths. Twenty-one compliance checks have been done throughout the county thus far in 2008, using a 17-year-old youth operative. These 21 checks resulted in only one sale, showing that Clallam County has a more than 95-percent success rate in 2008. During compliance checks, a certificate of appreciation is awarded to businesses that refuse to sell tobacco to minors. Stores that do sell to underaged youth operatives are rechecked within 60 days. It is illegal to sell or provide tobacco to people under the age of 18.
