The ways of the canoe

After years of offering five or six summer programs for school-age children, Peninsula College decided to take it up a notch and offer 10 programs this year, according to youth program coordinator Trudy Robbins.
To kick off the summer, the college offered “Paddle On!,” a weeklong challenge course beginning June 23 to teach students about the “ways of the canoe.” The 23 participating children from the Quilayute, Hoh and Jamestown S’Klallam tribes spent the week learning more about their cultures.
A highlight for the children was designing their own canoe paddles, which were donated by the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and the college and hand-carved by Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe artist Jeff Munson, who was on hand to work with the children on designs.
Other summer programs for children include Junior Paramedics, Digital Photography, Beginning Watercolor and the female-only Self Defense for Teen Girls. For more information, visit www.pc.ctc.edu/.
