First Teacher hosts its annual Traffic Safety School, beginning at 10 a.m. Sept. 19 at Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St. The event is at the school playground and in Room 4W.
Representatives from the police and fire departments will talk about tricycle safety and proper technique for wearing a helmet.
Clallam County Fire Department 3 will have a fire truck on display. The Happy Tymer Clowns will be on hand. Children can ride on the playground tricycles and Happy Tymer Clown Mick A Dee will ride her trike to lead the way along the paved Community School playground path.
A limited number of free helmets are to be given away; refreshments are provided by Costco.

Band boosters host
first 2008-2009 meeting
The Sequim High Band Boosters have the first meeting of the school year at 7 p.m. Sept. 16 in the school district boardroom at the Performing Arts building, 533 N. Sequim Ave.
Topics include beginning-of-the-school-year activities, including Husky Band Day, calendar and cookie dough sales and other fundraisers to begin in the next couple of months.
All parents of band students are encouraged to attend. The meeting is open to the public.

He, Huff named to
WSU summer honor roll
Sequim students Lin He and Valerye Frances Huff were named to Washington State University's 2008 summer honor roll.
To be eligible for the WSU president's honor roll, undergraduate students must earn grade-point-averages of 3.75 in at least nine graded hours in a single term at WSU or a GPA of 3.50 based on at least 15 cumulative hours of graded work.
Richard makes U.W. list
Kyle Richard of Sequim was named to the University of Washington dean's list for spring quarter 2008.
To qualify for the school's dean's list, undergraduate students must maintain a quarterly grade-point-average of 3.50 or higher with at least 12 graded credits.
Richard is studying in the interdisciplinary undergraduate program at U.W.'s College of Arts & Sciences.
Sequim library hosts
special storytime series
The Sequim branch of the North Olympic Library System is launching a new series of story times for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and families starting in September and running through December.
Weekly story times start Wednesday, Sept. 17, and conclude Dec. 17. "Born to Read," a series of story times especially for babies and the adults who love them, will offer children ages 6-12 months and their caregivers a first experience with board and cloth books, along with rhymes, lap games and interactive activities. The programs are held weekly; they will begin at 11:30 a.m. and last about 30 minutes.
Toddler story times, for children ages 12-24 months and their special adult, start at 10:45 a.m. and last about 30 minutes. Preschool story times are held weekly; they begin at 10 a.m. and last about 30 minutes.
Monthly "pajama" story times for families will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 23, and continue on the fourth Tuesday evening of each month through Dec. 16. Starting at 6:30 p.m. and lasting about 30 minutes, these story times are for families with children ages 3 and older.

Local students named to Whitworth University Laureate Society for spring semester 2008 included Sarah Davies, Alicia Gilstrom, Jennifer Holloway, Lara Lichten and Kori Winnop, all of Sequim.
The students qualified for the academic honor society by maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.75 during the semester.
Bellis named to
national honor roll
Mary Bellis, a junior-to-be at Sequim High School, was named to the 2007-2008 National Honor Roll.
National Honor Roll is an organization that recognizes high school and middle school students for exceptional academic success.
