A Sequim man was listed in serious condition Monday afternoon after being airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Saturday night.

Clyde A. Martin, 57, Sequim had been struck by a car while standing in the roadway at U.S. Highway 101 and River Road about one mile west of Sequim.

He was cited for being a pedestrian in the roadway, which is an infraction.

The driver, Lawrence A. Lang, 61, Port Angeles, was not injured and not cited.

According to the Washington State Patrol, 9-1-1 dispatchers had received three reports of a pedestrian in the roadway at Highway 101 and River Road about 8:30 p.m. and troopers were en route to the scene when the pedestrian was struck.

Lang was driving a Ford Escort westbound and tried to avoid Martin, who was intoxicated and standing in the westbound lane, according to the trooper's report.

Martin was struck by the car and knocked onto the westbound shoulder of Highway 101, the report stated. He was taken to Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles and then airlifted to Harborview with a compound fracture to his left leg.

The Escort sustained damage to its right side mirror and was driven from the scene.

Washington State Patrol spokeswoman Krista Hedstrom said the charge under RCW 46.61.266 is "pedestrian under the influence of alcohol," which is a traffic infraction.

Martin would be responsible for paying for any damage to the car, she said.
