Haller tutor training set

Helen Haller reading specialist Betsy Smith is having her last "official" tutor training at 3:30 p.m. Jan. 13 in her portable classroom, 3W, at Helen Haller Elementary School, 350 W. Fir St.

This is for new volunteers who want to learn more about the program.

Exchange group seeks volunteer advocate

Representatives from World Heritage, a nonprofit student exchange program, are seeking a volunteer from the community to serve as a representative and program supporter for high school exchange students.

Volunteers screen potential host families, meet with local high school representatives and provide support counseling for host families and students.

First Teacher sets

January events

The First Teacher program at Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St., has a number of special activities planned for January.

The First Teacher room, 4W, is home to Monday reading times. On Jan. 12, First Teacher mom Karen Charters reads family favorites.

First Teacher also hosts special Friday events. On Jan. 9, young visitors make paper snowflakes. On Jan. 16, Sequim Police officer Darrell Nelson and other volunteers from the Sequim Police Department help parents create a safety file for their children that include fingerprints and DNA samples; Happy Tymer clowns are scheduled to assist. On Jan. 23, esthetician Kathleen Prince talks about and demonstrates good skin care techniques. On Jan. 30, dentist Brian Hughes talks about the importance of good early oral hygiene for children.

First Teacher also hosts two special events in January. On Jan. 15, Bonnie Schmidt from Music Together demonstrates baby/toddler sign language, and on Jan. 21 is the United Way-sponsored "Listening to Community Voices" program, a time to talk with others about community needs (call First Teacher in advance to reserve a spot).
