Holiday chorus gives $2,000 for Sequim Community Aid

As promised, the Sequim Christmas Chorus donated part of the funds from its 2008 concerts to Sequim Community Aid.
With contributions from community individuals and businesses, the oversize check totaled $2,000.
Chorus director Gary McRoberts and coordinator Julie Jackson presented the check to Sequim Community Aid president Donna Tidrick at First Federal's Sequim Avenue branch on Jan. 14.
"It warms our hearts that the chorus was able to raise $2,000 for Sequim Community Aid in these difficult economic times," Jackson said.
"That amount is 33-percent more than we gave in 2007."
Two of the chorus's three concerts in December 2008 sold out. Total attendance was more than 800 people.
"The chorus board wants to give back to the community in both tangible and intangible ways, and the response to our efforts has been exciting," Jackson said.
First Federal made the largest single donation, $1,000.
"Sequim Community Aid greatly appreciates this outstanding support from the chorus and the community," Tidrick said, adding that all of the money will go toward emergency support for families and individuals living within the Sequim School District boundaries.
Founded in 1947, Sequim Community Aid provides one-time help with bills such as utilities or rent when a person or family's basic needs for living are in jeopardy. In previous years, volunteers have helped more than 800 individuals and families in a 365-day period.
McRoberts has directed the Sequim Christmas Chorus for three years. The chorus, in its 25th season, is open to singers of all backgrounds, religions and levels of experience. No auditions or fees are required.
Rehearsals begin in September and the chorus disbands for the year after performing three concerts in December. The chorus is presented by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Helping others help themselves
Sequim Community Aid provides financial assistance to low and limited-income families and individuals and acts as a referral service to agencies providing standard emergency, long-term and self-help assistance.
The organization also hosts an annual "Toys for Sequim Kids" drive in December, distributing gifts, toys, games, clothing and blankets to Sequim School District children during the holiday season.
