Two Sequim students win $1,500 at youth challenge

A plan for expansion of their free weekly periodical "The Weekly Word" earned a pair of Sequim High School students one of two $1,500 cash prizes in the Entrepreneur Youth Challenge held Feb. 11 at Lincoln Center in Port Angeles.
Juniors Steve Luxton and Damon Houck started "The Weekly Word" in 2008 as a low-cost, high-visibility advertising medium for local small businesses.
The paper includes short stories, a calendar of local events, amusing quotations, a Sudoku puzzle and trivia questions. It is meant to be read while in a restaurant or coffee shop.
It is distributed Mondays at Sequim businesses.
The plan the pair presented to win the $1,500 award targeted their expansion efforts designed to increase the paper's exposure, customer base and quality.
It includes an increase in the newsprint quality, purchase and display of custom "Weekly Word" publication racks and a "Weekly Word" Web site.
The Entrepreneur Youth Challenge is presented by the Peninsula College Entrepreneur Institute and the Incubator @ Lincoln Center. It is sponsored by the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe.
