Wheels, Field Day focuses on vehicular history

Rolling out its collection, the Museum and Arts Center's Museum Field Day features some of the oldest vehicles on the peninsula. Admission is free.
Emily Westcott, co-organizer of the event, rounded up collectors to add their historical vehicles for an afternoon alongside the museum's antiques at the MAC Administration Building's lawn, 544 N. Sequim Ave.
"It's a chance to display things that can't always be seen," said Mickey Yeager, museum assistant.
"The whole point is to get people outside with the museum during the summer."
"It gets those who don't normally come, to come," Westcott said.
All vehicles shown will have a local background and/or owner.
Photos and information will be on hand about modes of transportation in Sequim and surrounding areas.
Sequim Valley Car Club members will bring vehicles. Logging trucks and equipment, railroad equipment, bicycles, motorcycles, horse-drawn wagons are tentatively scheduled to appear.
Vehicles are being added to the roster daily up to the event.
"This one is going to be bigger and better," Westcott said.
Museum Field Day was first held in 2008, and Westcott wanted the event more focused so each year can be distinct.
"Last year was trial and error, with a lot of miscellaneous stuff," she said.
"This year we are doing it so the event is more self-explanatory."
The main draw for the event, Yeager said, is the guided tours.
People can walk through and see the museum's thousands of items that aren't displayed in the 175 W. Cedar St., facility.
"Staff worked hard with lots of hours to clear out space in the collection for tours," Westcott said.
Museum assistants Kiera Hendrickson and Yeager will be leading crafts and activities for children based on local Native American themes.
They typically lead puppet shows on Saturdays for children at the museum.
A box of touchable items for children will be on hand, since most displays in the museum's collection are not for holding.
The Old Time Fiddlers will play for the afternoon, and food from Catered Affair will be for sale.
Westcott said the 2010 Museum Field Day will focus on historical, local farm equipment.

Museum Field Day will run from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15.
