Nash's Organic Produce hosts two field day sessions on Monday, Aug. 24, to examine trials of spring and winter wheat varieties.

The trials are being conducted by Steve Jones and Kevin Murphy of Washington State University, who have partnered with Nash's Organic Produce to test 20 varieties of spring wheat and 24 varieties of winter wheat for nutritional content, yield and disease resistance.

Purpose of the trials is to evaluate which varieties will work well in western Washington, including Sequim.

This is the second year that WSU has conducted spring wheat trials (planted in March or April) in Sequim, and the first year for winter wheat (planted in late September or early October). Results from last year's trials will be available for comparison this year.

Some of the varieties planted at Nash's Organic Produce were developed more than 80 years ago, while others are newly developed.

Two sessions, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., will be guided by Sam McCulloch, equipment manager and soil prep supervisor at Nash's Organic Produce.

The field walks will be held at the Don Wheeler Farm, on the northwest corner of Woodcock and Ward roads, just west of the Dungeness River.

The field day is free and open to the public. For more information, call 681-7458.
