Gala garners $112,000 for Sequim cancer center

The annual Harvest of Hope Winemakers Gala raised $112,000 for patients at the Thomas Family Cancer Center at Olympic Medical Center's campus in Sequim.
The Saturday, Oct. 10, event drew nearly 200 people to the "Evening in Barcelona" at the SunLand Golf & Country Club in Sequim, where guests dined on a Spanish feast prepared by local chef Doug Seaver and wines imported from Spain by Marshall Jorgensen of Classical Wines of Seattle.
Despite a lagging economy, event chairwoman Sara Maloney said, "This year's result is the second most successful ever in the seven-year history of the event.
"We are delighted the evening was so incredible and thank our generous sponsors, attendees and individual donors."
Attendees could bid in a live auction for items that included two tickets to a game of choice at the World Series. They fetched $800, while a private dinner with Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna sold for $1,200.
In all, the auction raised $16,550.
A special component of the evening was breast cancer survivor Virginia Southmayd sharing her story of battling the disease. In response, the audience donated $43,000 to the Patient Navigator Program that helps patients cope with a variety of concerns while they are treated for cancer.
