Greywolf green thumbs

Just like farmers of today and yesteryear, Greywolf Elementary students have reaped what they sowed.

Second-graders in Renee Mullikin's class harvested their community garden last week, picking and preparing the vegetables for a soup.

Mullikin said it was their best harvest yet, with an abundance of potatoes, carrots and squash.

There was so much soup that they were able to make a second batch.

Students in Mullikin's class last year were invited to share the soup, as they planted the crops the previous school year.

After the students finished eating, they shared the extra soup with teachers and friends.

The students were positive about their soup concoction.

"If they grow it and make it, then they'll eat things they wouldn't normally wouldn't touch," Mullikin said.

One girl liked it so much she had six bowls.

This was the third year for the tradition, which is part of the students' curriculum on learning about the plant life cycle.

"I think to see the whole process and life cycle of plants is an amazing learning experience," Mullikin said.

"The laughter and surprise was a joy."

During the summer vacation, the vegetables are irrigated with the school's watering system with no additional effort or supervision needed.
