Funds for animals

A French flea market to raise money for animals is Dec. 10-23 at Vision Landscape Nursery, 131 Kitchen-Dick Road, Sequim. Gifts for home or garden are available from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday in the heated greenhouse.

All proceeds go to animal welfare groups of the Olympic Peninsula: Peninsula Friends of Animals, Welfare for Animals Guild, the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society and the Northwest Raptor Center.

Live water

Jim Gilliland offers a free live water awareness seminar from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Natural Healing Clinic, 162 S. Barr Road, Port Angeles. Emotional Freedom Technique training and a support group also are available.

Dog training program

Best Friend Nutrition: A Health Food Store for Pets and professional dog trainer Judith Bell launch "The Trainer is in ...!" from noon-2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, and 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 680 W. Washington St., Suite B102, Sequim.

The program is for dog owners needing on-the-spot, immediate advice about how to lead their dog into correct behavior using positive reinforcement methods.

Appointments aren't needed for this free service, although a donation to animal rescue is encouraged.

Centerpieces created

Henery's Garden Center, 1060 Sequim-Dungeness Way, Sequim, hosts a holiday centerpiece class at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12. A variety of greens and berries will be combined with a holder for a taper candle.

Sequim farm owners accepted by association

Sanford and Ila Feibus, of Ila's Place farm in Sequim, were accepted as members of the Northwest Highland Cattle Association. Membership includes more than 95 ranches and farms dedicated to preserving the Highland breed of cattle, recognized by long horns and shaggy coats.

Low numbers once threatened the breed, but the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy priority list now shows Highlands as "recovering."



Unemployment call centers

Unemployment insurance call centers in Washington are now open at 7 a.m. on weekdays to deal with the increasing number of calls. The recent federal extension of benefits, persistent high unemployment and the typical winter peak are driving up the call volumes, according to the state Employment Security Department.

Unemployed workers can help ease the situation by calling during less busy times on Thursday and Friday mornings or by applying online at www.esd.wa.gov.
