Two new tsunami alert sirens should be installed at Clallam Bay and the Dungeness fire station later this month following county commissioner approval last week.

The Missouri company that specializes in installing these sirens should be out within three weeks, said Jamye Wisecup, program coordinator for the Clallam County Sheriff's Office Emergency Management Division.

After the underground utility lines are located, installation should take only a few hours, she said.

"Then once they are on the system, we will test them at noon on the first Monday of every month. I'm looking forward to having them," Wisecup said.

"We want to ensure people are hearing them and the voices are clear. We'll have people call in to say if they heard it," she said.

The test will consist of 10 seconds of Winchester wind chimes followed by a voice message stating it is a test of the all hazard alert broadcast system.

The test message's exact wording will be publicized before the scheduled Feb. 1 test, Wisecup said.

One siren will be installed at Clallam Bay's water treatment plant and the other will be placed near the Dungeness fire station.

The siren, about 12 feet tall atop a 40-foot power pole, can be heard up to five miles away and the voice message can be heard as far as 4,000 feet away.
