Historic trust seeks barns and buildings

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation seeks nominations to its 2010 Most Endangered Historic Properties list. Nomination forms are at the trust's Web site, www.wa-trust.org/most endangered. Nominations are due Monday, March 15, and the list will be announced in May.
Among the trust's successes are the statewide listing in 2006 of Washington historical barns. The listings resulted in the 2007 Heritage Barn Preservation Initiative, which established the Heritage Barn Register and set aside funding for stabilization and rehabilitation grants to assist barn owners with preservation projects.
The initiative resulted in 408 barns being designated as official Washington State Heritage Barns. Through the grant program, 31 barns received funds to assist with rehabilitation.
Ongoing threats to historical properties include demolition, neglect, incompatible development and insensitive alteration. Inclusion in the Most Endangered List can be an initial step in campaigns that bring attention to historical resources.
