Thrift shop extends hours
Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild's Thrift Shop, on the corner of Second Avenue and Bell Street, will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays March 6 and March 20.
All white-tagged items will be half price during the Saturday openings.

U.W. updates and elects
United Way of Clallam County holds its annual meeting from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at the Port Angeles School District offices, 216 E. Fourth St.
Officers will be elected and an annual report of each committee's work will be given at the meeting.

Ensemble presents winter concert
The Peninsula College Jazz Ensemble presents a free winter-quarter concert at
7 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, in the Little Theater at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
Music selections range from show tunes, jazz standards from Horace Silver, John Lewis, Walter Davis and Johnny Griffin, and Latin jazz classics like "Afro Blue," up through modern jazz composers such as Chick Corea, Steve Davis, Wayne Shorter and Charles Mingus.
A new work "Señor Luis" by the band's director, Dr. David Jones, also will be featured.
Is that food?
Nutritional expert Lesia McNabb presents "Do You Know What You Are Eating?"
She will speak at a free Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic forum at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, in the second-floor conference room, Olympic Medical Center Services building, 840 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.
Topics include how foods and beverages affect the body; fat, carbohydrates and fiber content in foods; healthier choices as alternatives to eating at fast food restaurants; diabetes, heart disease, obesity and sugar addiction.
Reservations will be required for a free tour of a local supermarket on Wednesday, March 17.
Prepping the party
The Clallam County Democratic Central Committee holds a quarterly meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 6, at Jefferson School, 218 E. 12th St., Port Angeles.
The agenda includes the county party's platform; resolutions to place before the county convention on Saturday, April 10, at the school; discussion of the convention process; and discussions with moveon.org and Organizing for America representatives.
At 1 p.m., Nancy Messmer, of Sekiu, speaks on the precinct committee officers' role. A number of precincts have officer vacancies to be filled by election or appointment.
The quarterly meeting will be preceded by committee meetings at 10 a.m.
Book signings in March
Author Dodie Sparks will be at Starbucks, 1095 W. Washington St., Sequim, from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturdays, March 6 and 20, with her children's book "Spring ABCs."
The book's poem is accompanied by reproductions of Sequim artist Bob Thompson's original oil paintings.
Autographed copies of the book and a preview of new materials will be available.
Sparks is working on "Summer ABCs" and "Never Too Old to Chase a Dream."

Lend a hand for MS
March is National Multiple Sclerosis Education and Awareness Month.
Awareness kits and instructions are available from the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation for volunteers interested in becoming involved in an effort to raise the public's awareness of the illness.
MS Helping Hands, headquartered in Edmonds, provides services and resources to people with multiple sclerosis in Washington.
Planning commission has vacancy
The city of Sequim is seeking applicants for the planning commission. Applications are available for a term expiring Jan. 10, 2011.
Applicants must live within the city limits.
The commission meets at 6 p.m. on first and third Tuesdays. It serves as an advisory board to the city council on land use and zoning issues.

Boards seek volunteers
Clallam County Juvenile and Family Service is looking for citizens to volunteer for its juvenile community diversion boards in Sequim, Port Angeles and Forks.
Citizens must be at least 19 years old and able to pass a criminal background check.
Volunteer community diversion boards review cases of first offenders and work with them to develop a contract that will give consequences for his/her actions that will help repair the harm done to the community, family and self.
