Brad Woolf, a former Sequim High School football star, is suing the school district over an arm injury he suffered during a physical education class in November 2008.

Woolf, represented by McMenamin & McMenamin of Seattle, filed the lawsuit March 1 in Clallam County Superior Court.

He is seeking an unstated amount for personal injuries, medical treatment costs and compensation for "pain, suffering and mental anguish, past and future."

According to the lawsuit, Woolf's physical education class was playing "sharks and minnows" in the school gym on Nov. 7, 2008.

While running parallel to the bleachers, Woolf began to fall and put his arm through the glass portion of a door.

The injury tore Woolf's arm up to the bicep, leaving it in a sling and causing him to miss the remainder of the 2008 football season. He has required continuing medical treatment since the injury, according to the lawsuit.

"The district's employees provided no warnings prior to starting the game," the lawsuit stated.

"Prior to Woolf's injuries, other students had tripped or fallen or run into each other during the game.

"The district has a duty to its students to exercise ordinary care and to anticipate reasonably foreseen dangers so as to take precautions for protecting the children in its custody from such dangers."

The lawsuit also charged the school district employees - Eric Wicker and Susan Lewis - failed to stop the game even though several other students had tripped and fallen.

It also stated the district shouldn't have made the game part of the physical education curriculum and the students shouldn't have played near a door that lacked safety glass.

Sequim Schools Superintendent Bill Bentley said he couldn't comment.
