Peninsula College students Colleen Murphy-Carey and Shaoyi Qin have been named members of the 2010 All-Washington Academic Team. They were honored by Gov. Christine Gregoire in late March.

The annual ceremony recognizes top scholars from community and technical colleges across the state. The award is given to students for scholastic achievement and service to their communities and colleges.

Murphy-Carey, 19, is a native of Port Angeles and has attended Peninsula College since her junior year of high school. She received her AA honors degree in June 2009 and is finishing prerequisites for the University of Washington Medical Technology Program. She also works as a math tutor for Upward Bound students, is captain of PC's softball team and last year participated in the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates Program. She is an active volunteer for United Way of Clallam County and various partner agencies. She has a 3.6 grade-point average.

Qin, 21, is a native of China. After graduating from high school, Qin came to Peninsula College and plans to transfer to a four-year college and get a bachelor's degree in accounting. She is a member of the Associated Student Council and has a 3.81 grade-point average.

Both Murphy-Carey and Qin will receive $250 scholarships from KeyBank and $500 scholarships from the National Education Loan Association. All of Washington's public and independent four-year colleges and universities also are offering special scholarship opportunities to members of the 2009 All-Washington Academic Team.

The All-Washington Academic Team is sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges; the presidents and trustees of Washington's two-year colleges, the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, KeyBank and NELA.
