Swain’s Outdoor closing this month

After four years in Sequim’s Kite Plaza, Swain’s Outdoor is packing up and moving in with the company’s Port Townsend location.

Store Manager Grant Cable, who is also the son of co-owner Glenda Swain Cable, said the bad economy and an unsupportive bank are to blame for the store’s closure.

Cable wouldn’t go into detail about which bank was “unsupportive” but said he was sure economic factors played into that as well.

“With the economy down it’s harder to get a loan,” he said.

Cable said they’re just doing what they had to do.

Cable said his parents, who own Swain’s Outdoor, are retiring so focusing on one store instead of two will be better for everyone.

The items inside the store will all be sent to the Port Townsend store, except for the furniture such as shelves and display racks.

The Port Townsend store is doing well and the extra inventory is expected to boost sales, he said.

The store will also begin paring down their inventory to sell more basics such as jeans, socks and Carhartt clothing and less of the Columbia and Woolrich lines, he said.

The store is tentatively scheduled to close at the end of June, although they may stay open for the beginning of July, he said. The Swain’s Outdoor lease goes through June 2011 so they are trying to find a sub-letter, he said.

Colleen McAleer, of Re/Max Team McAleer, is handling the subletting and said she has had some interest in the building from government and private retail businesses.

The building is 9,283 square feet with a rental rate of $6,500 a month, she said.
