Just like old times.

For three quarters, this looked like an Olympic League prep football showdown pitting equally talented teams vying for a shot at a league title.

For a 14-minute span late in the first half, however, Sequim’s offense, defense and special teams unleashed a fury that overwhelmed Kingston’s Buccaneers and turned an early 7-0 Bucs lead into a 56-28 Wolves win.

Beginning with Tyler Forshaw’s 90-yard kickoff return and capped by Frank Catelli’s fumble recovery in the end zone, Sequim scored six touchdowns in just eight plays during that first half stretch, turning this key league contest into a rout.

The Wolves got two scores each from defense and special teams, plus three passing touchdowns and a rushing TD.

 

“It was our playmakers stepping up,” Sequim coach Erik Wiker said, following a victory win that keeps Sequim undefeated in league play (4-0, 5-1 overall) heading into next Friday’s Homecoming game against Olympic.

“I wish I could plan it that way every week,” he said.

For much of the first quarter and second half, the Buccaneers looked up to the task of taking on the defending Olympic League champs. But a spate of turnovers and quick Sequim scores were reminiscent of the teams’ three previous match-ups, with Sequim outscoring Kingston 156-13 collectively in those games.

“This (Kingston squad) is a far better team,” Wiker said of the Bucs (2-2 in league, 3-3 overall), now a four-year program seeking its first winning season.

“We had much respect for them. (The win) was just our kids playing tough.”

Sequim quarterback Drew Rickerson finished 18-of-32, passing for 205 yards and three touchdowns.
Teammate Isaac Yamamoto added 77 rushing yards and score, a touchdown catch, and interception for a six points and a fumble recovery.
