A commercial fisherman is missing after the boat he was in overturned on the Hoh River in west Jefferson County Monday afternoon.

Search efforts to find David Hudson Jr., 21, were unsuccessful as of Tuesday morning, Oct. 12.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, David Hudson Jr. and his sister, 29-year old Elva Hudson, were on the river about 1:30 p.m. Oct. 11 near the Hoh River Resort preparing to commercial fish. As their boat traveled downstream it struck a submerged tree and overturned.

Both occupants were thrown into the water; neither wearing a personal flotation device, according to the report. Elva Hudson swam to shore. She saw her brother drifting downstream, followed by the boat and the fishing net. He was wearing hip boots, rain paints and a gray sweatshirt.

The boat was located a few hours later in a large log jam.

Chief Criminal Deputy Joe Nole and Deputy David Thomas coordinated search efforts in cooperation with the Hoh Tribe, Washington State Fish and Wildlife, Olympic National Park and the U.S. Coast Guard, which furnished a helicopter equipped with a thermal imaging unit.

The Hoh River was searched from the time the initial report came in until dark on Oct. 11. The search resumed the morning of Oct. 12 with assistance from the Hoh tribe and family members.
