Members of Sequim Weight Watchers worked off 507 pounds and donated nearly 1,700 pounds of food during the group’s third Lose For Good campaign.

Co-leader Eileen Romano said people were absolutely on fire for the campaign that ran mid-September to Oct. 23, sharing food as they lost weight.

Romano added to the members’ contributions the amount of the biggest weight loss for the week and ended up donating almost 160 pounds of food.

“Everyone was very interested and were asking how much did they lose and how much do we have,” Romano said.

Last year, members donated 1,277 pounds of food.

Weight Watchers created the Lose For Good campaign to help fight obesity and hunger on a local, national and global level. As members lose weight, Weight Watchers will donate up to $1 million to two hunger fighting organizations: Share Our Strength and Action Against Hunger.

Members have lost 8 million pounds during the campaign and staff have organized 5,300 local food drives resulting in about 3.5 million pounds of food for food banks.

Stephen Rosales, Sequim Food Bank board president, said the timing is perfect for the donation as he and volunteers are preparing Thanksgiving baskets for 800-1,000 people to be distributed Nov. 19-20, 22-23.

Sequim Food Bank, 144 W. Alder St., can be reached at 461-6038.

Sequim Weight Watchers, 150 E. Bell St., is open 10 a.m. Mondays, 9 a.m. Thursdays, 8:45 a.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. Saturdays.
