Port Townsend Community Orchestra presents its holiday concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Chimacum High School auditorium, 91 West Valley Road, Chimacum. Children are welcome.

At 6:45 p.m. there is a pre-concert conversation with Maestro Dewey Ehling, providing insight into the music being performed.

Port Townsend Community Orchestra is supported by generous contributions from its patrons and from local businesses. Admission is free; donations are greatly appreciated.

The concert opens with “Procession of the Nobles” by Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov, from the never completed opera-ballet “Mlada. Mlada.”

In 1906, Gustav Holst set the poem “In the Bleak Midwinter,” written by English poet Christina Rossetti, to music. It has become one of the most popular English Christmas carols.

“Christmas Visions,” by Chuck Sayre and Marty Gold’s arrangement of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” rounds out the first half. There will be singalong carol sessions.

The second half includes George Frederic Handel’s overture to “Messiah” and the “Concerto Grosso No. 1 in G Major,” featuring three active musicians in the community: Kristin Forssen Smith and Barbara Henry on violin and Kyle Campbell on cello.

Smith studied music at the University of Montana and played with the Edmonton Symphony for eight years. She teaches and performs with the Port Townsend and Port Angeles symphonies, the Port Townsend String Quartet and various folk dance ensembles.

Henry studied violin performance at Montana State University and is in her ninth year as a music teacher with Port Townsend High School.

Campbell was a first-place winner of the Stars of Tomorrow in Port Townsend and he won the Young Artists Concerto competition in Port Angeles. He studied at the University of Washington and has played with the Port Angeles Symphony and Port Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Port Townsend Orchestra and Turtle Bluff Orchestra.
