All but one of 30 tobacco retailers in Clallam County passed compliance checks conducted this year with an underage operative attempting to buy cigarettes.

 

The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services said Lovell’s 76 Roadrunner in Port Angeles is the only retailer to sell cigarettes to the 16-year-old operative conducting the checks with the county’s Tobacco Prevention and Control Program. The youth must have proper identification and is not allowed to lie about his age, said Jill Dole, tobacco prevention and control specialist.

 

People younger than 18 years old are not allowed to purchase tobacco and it also is illegal to provide tobacco products to underage minors.

 

The Liquor Control Board is responsible for issuing citations to the clerk who sold the cigarettes and to the owner of the business, she said.

 

Sequim retailers who passed the check include Carlsborg Station, Mini Fairmount, Rite Aid, Hardy’s Market, Safeway Store, Safeway Fuel Station, SpeediMart, QFC Market and QFC Fuel Station.
