Bursting at the seams is an understatement for the amount of stuff volunteers with the Sequim Senior Activity Center compiled for the sixth annual benefit sale, running Aug. 4-6.

Tens of thousands of items fill two units in the Bell Creek Plaza east of QFC.

A dozen volunteers have organized and priced items since May for the sale, the center’s largest annual fundraiser.

“You’ll find something here you didn’t know you needed,” said Margaret Cox, president of the center’s board of directors.

She’s bought plants, books by the dozens, an exercise bike and a like-new recliner at past sales. Ray Bentsen, chairman of the sale and board vice president, said there’s no shortage of stuff.

“Compared to some who say they have a large garage sale, now this is a huge sale,” he said. “It’s hard to enumerate what we have here.”

All items are donated and categorized, such as furniture, books, movies, puzzles, clothes, etc. Bentsen said he’s amazed at the number of unopened donated items.

In previous years, the center had a boutique for nicer items, but now they’ve brought in a consigner to appraise some potentially high-priced items to see if they can receive more than they would at the sale.

Bentsen said it’s in the best interest of both parties especially to earn more money for the center. Some of those items include fine china, antique woodwork and art and sterling silver kettles.

Michael Smith, executive director of the center, said the sale grossed about $8,000 its first two years, but the past two years netted about $20,000. The organizers’ goal is to reach that mark or exceed it. Smith said some items are sold online but the bulk of their profits come from the sale.

The sale already is on-track with two donated boats sold online for $4,500.

Continuing the sale past the weekend depends on space availability and how much stuff is left, Smith said.

“The best items will be there to those who come first,” he said.

If there are leftover items, Bentsen said, other local charities collect them to sell or use.

The last day for donations to the sale is 10 a.m.-3p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3.

The members-only pre-sale runs 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 4. Applications are available at the door for $35 a year. The public sale runs 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Aug. 5-6.
