The Olympic Peninsula Mycological Society’s wild mushroom show is back Oct. 23.

 

Lowell Dietz, president of OPMS, said last year more than 1,000 people came to the show, which displays all kinds of mushrooms and offers identification for those brought in by the public.

 

“Frequently people will have a wild mushroom in their yard or they find a long path of mushrooms when they’re hiking and they wonder, ‘What is that?’” he said.

 

Three or four mushroom identifiers will be on hand, along with OPMS members, to answer questions.

Dietz said the show is the society’s main public outreach event.

 

Mushrooms collected by the society on one of their many forays will be on display. The society has more than 300 members across the peninsula, most of whom join because they are interested in finding mushrooms to eat, Dietz said.

 

“People who are interested in really good food fit in well with our members,” he said.

 

The show is from noon- 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road. Admission is free.
