Here are some projects and notable reports from the City of Sequim’s city council meeting on Nov. 12.

Sidewalk coming on Third Avenue

In the coming weeks, C&J Excavating, Inc., begins work on connecting sidewalks on the east side of Third Avenue from Fir Street to the alley between Alder and Spruce streets. Councilors unanimously approved a contract worth $39,074 with an additional $5,000 for needed adjustments in order changes.

C&J had the lowest of eight bids. City staff initially estimated the project at $48,520. Funds come from the Transportation Benefit District. David Garlington, city engineer, said the company would install about 450 feet of 6-foot-wide concrete sidewalk and ADA-compliant curbing. Councilors pushed for the sidewalks to be complete to create a safer walkway from nearby Sequim schools. Garlington said the sidewalks would look different from current ones because they are an improvement.

New signage for awareness

City staff plans to place 12 large signs around Sequim to bring awareness to upcoming updates to the Comprehensive Plan, Critical Areas Ordinance and Shoreline Master Plan Ordinance.

 

Director of Community Development Chris Hugo said each sign includes project information, contact information and a QR code for smartphones to photograph and be automatically linked to the city’s website.

 

He said the signs could be interchanged with new information for $35.

 

Hugo said the community will be accustomed to the signs and know that something significant is happening.

 

Staff plans to create awareness through other means such as Sequim Speaks and in city utility statements.

 

Open house meetings for the community are at the Sequim Transit Center 190 W. Cedar St.

 

The Critical Areas Ordinance open houses are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29.

 

The Shoreline Master Plan Ordinance open houses are at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1.

The Planning Commission sees the ordinances on Dec. 6, with public hearings at the Dec. 12 city council meeting.

 

City Hall remodel complete

A remodel of City Hall was recently completed by Maple View Enterprises for $38,516.

 

Human resources staff moved back into city hall with more office space created along with a new break room, conference room and updated front counter space. The council originally approved up to $50,000 for the project. Plans are still under way to pursue a new city hall.

 

The next city council meeting is at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28.
