Sequim Realtor and former city council member Paul McHugh has thrown his hat in the ring to finish Jim McEntire’s 6-year term as Port of Port Angeles commissioner.
McEntire will be sworn in as a Clallam County commissioner Dec. 30.
Holly Hairell, Port of Port Angeles human resources manager, said 12 people applied for the board vacancy and Commissioner John Calhoun has met with all of them.
Hairell said she could not name the applicants but she could say that 11 men and one woman applied. The Port of Port Angeles has never had a female commissioner, she said.
Economic development interest
McHugh said he started to think about applying to finish the last two years of McEntire’s term after McEntire announced he would run for county commissioner.
After waiting to learn more about the selection process, he submitted an application and met with Calhoun, he said.
McHugh’s no stranger to public office, having served as a Sequim City Council member, Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center board member and Clallam County Planning Commission member.
McHugh operated McHugh Realtors in Sequim for more than 20 years after taking over the company from his father in 1988. He “semi-retired” and sold the company, which merged with Windermere Real Estate Sequim – East, in August 2010.
“I really like the mission of the port because it dovetails with what I worked toward on the Sequim City Council, which is economic development and jobs,” McHugh said. “I’d like to be part of that effort.”
Hairell said the port will have a special meeting Jan. 4 for Calhoun and commissioner-elect Jim Hallett to discuss candidates and whittle down the list.
At the port’s regular meeting Jan. 9, the two commissioners will discuss it further, she said.
“The goal is to appoint someone in January,” she said.
Commissioners are paid $200 a month and $104 per meeting day with a cap of 96 meeting days allowed per year, according to state law.
The meetings begin at 9:30 a.m. at the port’s administrative headquarters at 338 W. First St., Port Angeles.
