The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents to protect themselves from mail theft.

Undersheriff Ron Peregrin said a recent rash of mail thefts occurred in the areas of Deer Park Road, O’Brien Road, Four Seasons Park and west of Port Angeles.

“Thieves know that during this time of year mail often will contain items of value that can be stolen from your mailbox or packages are likely to be left on your front porch and are easy targets for being taken,” he said in a news release.

The Sheriff’s Office advises residents use the letter slots at the post office to mail letters or give them to a letter carrier. Also, pick up mail promptly after delivery and don’t leave it in the mailbox overnight.

Don’t send cash in the mail and ask the bank for “secure” checks that can’t be altered. Tell the post office when you’ll be out of town, so it can hold your mail until you return.

If you see suspicious persons in your neighborhood, obtain a good description of the individuals, their vehicle and a vehicle license number if possible, then report them as soon as possible to police, Peregrin said.
