Olympic National Park will join other National Park Service sites throughout the country by offering ‘fee-free days’ Jan. 14-16 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday.
“We are pleased to invite the public to join us this weekend as part of the nationwide observance of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy,” Park Superintendent Karen Gustin said.
Over the holiday weekend, the Olympic National Park Visitor Center will screen a 30-minute video program entitled “A New Time, A New Voice,” about King’s life and work. The program will be shown at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., Jan. 14-16, with additional viewings available upon request.
The visitor center is located at 3002 Mount Angeles Road in Port Angeles and is open daily from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Most park roads and facilities are scheduled to be open this holiday weekend, including Hurricane Ridge.
Hurricane Ridge Road is scheduled to open daily at 9 a.m., weather permitting. Road status and current conditions are available by calling the park’s recorded information line at 565-3131 or by visiting the park’s Current Conditions web page at www.nps.gov/olym.
The park’s Twitter feed serves as an additional tool for visitors to get the latest Hurricane Ridge information. Road status, conditions and other useful information also are available by following www.twitter.com/hrwinteraccess. Users also can sign up to receive these updates as text messages to their cell phones.
The Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center, snack bar and ski shop will be open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, through Monday, Jan. 16, during the holiday weekend.
If there is enough snow, rope tows operated by the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club are scheduled to be running Jan. 15-17.
Information about the ski and snowboard area can be found online at hurricaneridge.com and on Facebook at HRWSC.
Local visitors are encouraged to carpool if possible, as parking at Hurricane Ridge is limited to 200 vehicles. Minor delays are possible at the Heart O’ the Hills entrance station if the parking lot is full.
A Hurricane Ridge shuttle runs twice daily Wednesday through Sunday plus Monday holidays from two downtown Port Angeles locations. More information is available at the Olympic Peninsula Visitors’ Bureau website at www.olympicpeninsula.org. Interested riders are encouraged to call All Points Charters and Tours at 360-565-1139 to reserve seats.
