Six showings in, the City of Sequim and Olympic Theatre Arts’ movie nights have seen a mixed number of attendees.

A recent highlight was the March 21 showing of “The Help” that sold out with more than 100 tickets. City councilors and OTA agreed upon a 40-ticket quota for each showing; however, previous showings sold fewer than expected.

“Grease” sold 29 tickets, “Some Like It Hot” 34 tickets, “North by Northwest” 37 tickets, “Babe” 12 tickets and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” 16 tickets.

The city and OTA are committed to 12 movie rentals from Swank Productions for showings they’ve planned through June on the theater’s gathering hall screen.

Mayor Ken Hays said the successful night should help future showings’ attendance.

“It takes time to build things like this up,” he said.

“I hope the lineup in the future will be just as attractive,” she said.

Councilors are careful not to mention movie titles because it could breach a contract that requires the city and OTA not pay for advertising; that could be seen as competition with other movie houses. In return, the city pays the lowest rental fee of $150 for each film.

The theater is donating its space, film equipment and janitorial services for the event, and holds rights for proceeds from concessions. If the groups profit, then revenue above expenses would support Music and Movies in the Park and programming at OTA.

Councilors initially agreed that to continue the program after a year they’ll need an average of at least 40 paid tickets per event. They’ll re-evaluate the program after the final June 20 showing of “Moneyball.”

Two showings run in April, May and June on the third Wednesday of the month and on the first Friday of the month to correspond with the First Friday Art Walk.
