Clallam County will go from 95 voting precincts to 67 starting with the August primary election.

The board of commissioners adopted a resolution at the April 3 meeting as submitted by County Auditor Patty Rosand to alter and combine voting precincts.

Voters being moved into a new precinct, or having their precinct renamed, will receive a new voter registration card and notification of their new precinct in the mail, Rosand said.

Last year, when Washington became a vote-by-mail state, legislation passed allowing a maximum of 1,500 active registered voters per precinct — up from the previous limit of 900, Rosand said.

“Clallam County will now have seven precincts with over 1,000 registered voters,” she said. “The smallest precinct will now have just over 200 voters, which is up from the previously very small precinct having 44 voters.”

A new precinct was created to cover Ediz Hook and all the water inside the hook after a citizen pointed out not all territory in the county was in a precinct. Rosand said because of his involvement there are now precinct lines that go out to international boundaries.

Districting revisions for other agencies also were examined in the process.

“When drawing precinct lines we took into consideration all the various districts within an area,” she said.

“County commissioner districts, cities, schools, hospital, fire, water, PUD and Park and Recreation Districts had to be looked at when making the decision on where to draw lines.”

Shoona Radon, elections supervisor; Julie Ridgway, voter registration coordinator; and Shannon Cosgrove, elections assistant, were the lead staff for the Auditor’s Office precinct project. Additionally, Republican and Democratic Party representatives were invited to give input on the creation of new precinct lines.
