The Albert Haller Foundation is accepting applications for funding of local nonprofit agencies providing services to the poor and needy in Clallam County.

Haller was born in Clallam County in 1903 and worked in the logging industry during the era of horses and steam donkeys. He is described as a very competent, careful logger who out-conserved the conservation policies of that era. He and his wife were equally thoughtful about investments, saving and investing wisely in land, enabling them to leave an ongoing legacy to the people of Clallam County.

Foundation grants are given annually to charitable organizations in Clallam County, with priority to those organizations providing food, housing, clothing, medical care and other programs that may enrich the lives of the poor and needy in the county. The amount to be distributed varies annually, depending on the earnings of the foundation’s endowment fund. The maximum allowable grant request is $17,000 for 2012.

The United Way of Clallam County serves as advisor to the Haller Foundation’s board of directors in making recommendations for grant funding. Information on the revised 2012 application process will be given at a bidders conference, offered on two dates: 3 p.m. Thursday, May 24, and at 9:30 a.m.

Thursday, June 14. The conferences will be located at the Peninsula Behavioral Health multi-purpose room, 118 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

Applications are available from the United Way office by e-mailing info@unitedwayclallam.org, or by calling 457-3011. Completed applications are due to United Way (102½ E. First St., P.O. Box 937, Port Angeles) by Friday, June 29.
