Homicide suspect in custody
A second homicide victim has been identified as Gary Lee Blanton, 28.

According to a press release from Jim Borte of the Clallam County Sheriff's Office, Blanton was found dead from gunshot wounds at a house on the 5000 block of Sequim Dungeness Way.

Both Blanton and homicide victim Jerry Wayne Ray were registered Level II sex offenders and evidence at both crime scenes indicate that suspect Patrick Drum, 34, had a particular animus toward sex offenders, Borte said. Drum was acquainted with both men and Blanton had recently moved into the home rented by Drum on Sequim Dungeness Way.

Early Sunday morning at about 8:30, Clallam County Sheriff's deputies and paramedics responded to 31 Heuhslein Road east of Port Angeles, where Ray was found dead from gunshot wounds, Borte said.

Around the same time, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person near a house at milepost six on Blue Mountain Road. Deputies found an abandoned car with a note that tied Drum to the crime scene on Heuhslein Road and the car, Borte said.

Containment was set up by officers of the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Border Patrol, Washington State Patrol, Port Angeles Police Department, Sequim Police Department, U.S. Fish and Wildlife and Washington State Fish and Wildlife. Two K9 units from the Port Angeles Police Department were deployed along with several multi-agency tactical tracking units and searched the area bounded by Blue Mountain Road, Gellor Road, and McCrorie Road for three-and-a-half hours, Borte said.

The teams were assisted by a helicopter from the air and marine branch of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol. The area is densely forested with many ravines and wet-lands. Drum was taken into custody in that area at 2:30 p.m.

Based on further information developed during the search for Drum, Sequim Police units entered a residence at 5011 Sequim Dungeness Way, north of Sequim, and found Blanton dead from gunshot wounds.

Drum is in custody at the Clallam County jail and the investigation continues. A press conference is planned for Monday.
