Sequim Community Aid seeks volunteers

Sequim Community Aid, a nonprofit, all-volunteer support agency, is seeking volunteers to help interview its growing clientele.

The agency receives donations and grants in order to interview people in need of help with electricity, housing rent/mortgage and/or water during an emergency.

Clients normally are referred from agencies such as Clallam County PUD, which in turn contact the group via phone at 681-3731. Volunteers make an appointment with the person in his/her home or a convenient place. Two volunteers meet with the person to assess need by asking about income, what the client is paying for, why he or she needs help and how many people are in the household.

Donna Tidrick, president of the group, said volunteers never go alone and they don't need to be a psychiatrist or bookkeeper.

“They just need to be caring and want to help,” she said. “It's a good way to help your neighbor and use your time.”

Last summer, Sequim Community Aid faced a financial crisis when it was nearly broke before community support poured in.

Tidrick said they are in a better spot now because the community appreciates what they do.
The agency has 18 volunteers, but many have fluctuating schedules.

Community Aid only gives assistance once per household per year but does refer people to other organizations. The new donation year begins Sept. 1.

Sequim Community Aid started in 1947 and meets 10:30 a.m. the first Thursday of each month, (next on Aug. 2) at First Federal, 1201 W. Washington St.

Call Sequim Community Aid at 681-3731 for assistance and mail donations to Sequim Community Aid, PO Box 1591, Sequim, WA 98382.
