The green metal bicycles around Sequim's downtown remain fine art pieces rather than racks as people don't seem to be using them, city officials say.

Jeff Edwards, city parks manager, said he's been told several times that people think the racks are art and not to be touched.

“The beautiful art you are seeing is for use,” he said.

The city purchased 58 racks in 2011 for $8,750 from Decorative Metal Services in Vancouver, Wash., as part of its Downtown Plan city beautification efforts.

Edwards said they've installed 25 in downtown and have about that many left for businesses to purchase at cost plus 15 percent or about $172 each.

“We're hoping businesses will see them and buy them,” he said. “I can only put them in public right-of-way.”

The new Black Bear Diner recently bought two, he said.

Within the city limits, chaining bicycles to light poles and trees is illegal and riders could be fined.

The racks have held up well, Edwards said, and haven't experienced any vandalism.
