Earlier this month, James W. Hopkins, 50, of Port Angeles, was reported missing from the Lyre River Campground on the east side of the river by friends. Deputies investigated the disappearance at that time and Clallam County Search and Rescue was utilized to search the area but located no leads.

In the days that followed, Clallam County Detectives made efforts to find Mr. Hopkins by monitoring account activity and checking with family and friends.

On the afternoon of Friday, September 28, deputies responded to the Lyre River Bridge at SR112 to a report of a deceased male in the river. On arrival, deputies did find the remains of an adult male in a log jam in the river just below the bridge.

Clallam County Search and Rescue responded to assist with the recovery. On Saturday, Sept. 29, Search and Rescue returned to the area to search the area for any other evidence and items that may lead to the man’s identity. They located some clothes and a wallet belonging to Mr. Hopkins along the river banks in some thick brush.

On Monday, Oct. 1, positive identification was made and Mr. Hopkins’ family was made aware of the discovery.

While an autopsy is scheduled, there is nothing at this time that indicates Mr. Hopkins passing is suspicious.
