Shirley L. Baker

A funeral for Sequim resident Shirley L. Baker will be held at noon today, Wednesday, April 30, at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, 108 W. Alder St. A graveside service follows at Sequim View Cemetery.

Mrs. Baker died April 24, 2008, at the age of 80.

She was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Glendale, Calif., to Herman and Cecil Pearl Blanchard Reinke.

She married Melvin J. Baker on April 5, 1947, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

A resident of Glendale, Calif., Chimacum and Sequim, she worked as a homemaker and farmer and was co-owner/operator of a sawmill.

She enjoyed reading, especially true stories, human interest and sociology. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and dancing at the Chicken Coop Road dance hall.

She is survived by her husband, Melvin J. Baker of Sequim; daughters Jackie Baker of Sequim and Jill Meeker of Rice; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brother Daryle Reinke and sister Phyllis Bogle.

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.



Mary Elsie Peer Reimer

A memorial service for Mary Elsie Peer Reimer will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave., Port Angeles. A cookie potluck reception follows.

Mrs. Reimer died April 24, 2008, at the age of 65 of complications from colon cancer.

She was born June 25, 1942, in Boise, Idaho, to Edward Walton and Gertrude Amelia Webb Peer. While growing up in Idaho, she lived in Boise Valley, Murphy and Orofino.

She served in the Ground Observer Corps (Air Force) while in high school in Orofino. She worked summers as a cook for the Forest Service fire crew in Idaho and graduated from Orofino High School in 1960.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from The College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, and earned a fifth-year certification from Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

After college, she taught second grade in Federal Way from 1964-1966.

She married Gordon Roland Reimer on Feb. 19, 1966, in Kent. He preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 2006.

After their marriage, they followed his job in construction and once had 19 addresses in one year.

They were based out of Black Diamond.

He helped build the substation at Discovery Bay in 1969 and she took a job teaching third grade at Helen Haller Elementary School in Sequim.

They lived on Blue Mountain Road from 1969-1972, when they moved into the Port Angeles city limits. In 1974, she left teaching to be a full-time mother and homemaker.

She was a census taker in 1990 and volunteered with various organizations.

Mrs. Reimer enjoyed calligraphy and illumination, reading, genealogy, embroidery, Pennsylvania Dutch folk art painting, making art eggs and more.

She was a Sunday school teacher at First Christian Church in Orofino, Idaho.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, a local branch founder of The Society for Creative Anachronism, Port Angeles Gun Club and Olympic Peninsula Flyfishing.

A member of the teachers union, she held a lifetime teaching certificate for the state of Idaho.

She is survived by her son Gordon E.R. Reimer of Port Angeles; daughter Amelia Reimer of Port Angeles; son-in-law Robert Davisson of Edmonds; brother and sister-in-law Sam and Marvel Peer of Yarnell, Ariz.; brothers- and sisters-in-law Walter and Del Reimer of Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada; and Bill and Mimi Reimer of Centreville, Va.; sisters-in-law Estelle Robinson of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, and Dolly Reimer of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; two grandsons; and many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Claude Crocker

A celebration of life memorial potluck for Claude Crocker will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 3, at the Pioneer Memorial Park clubhouse, 387 E. Washington St., Sequim.

A selection of his favorite tunes will be played.

Musicians, anyone who can sing and those who think they can't sing but are willing to try anyway, are invited to join in honor of a man who loved music.

Mr. Crocker was born Sept. 4, 1914, and died Jan. 2, 2008.

Robert H. Redding

A memorial service for Sequim resident Robert H. Redding will be held at

1 p.m., Saturday, May 3, at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, 108 W. Alder St.

Mr. Redding died April 21, 2008, at the age of 88.

He was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Hilo, Hawaii, to Willard D. and Emily Hull Hansen.

He married Grace Margaret Feeney in 1956 in Valdez, Alaska. She preceded him in death in 2006.

He served in the United States Army during World War II from 1942-46. He was a sergeant at the 1466th Army Air Force Base in Alaska.

He logged and worked for the Alaska Highway Department for 40 years.

A published writer of more than 20 books, he wrote westerns, novels, poems and children's books.

He loved going to Hurricane Ridge, which he visited almost every day.

John Evancho

No service was reported for Sequim resident John Evancho, who died April 21, 2008, at the age of 93.

He was born March 28, 1915, in Homestead, Penn., to Andrew and Anna Dzubach Evancho.

He married Bernice "Bunny"

Strevig on Feb. 13, 1963, in Flagstaff, Ariz. She preceded him in death on March 29, 1999.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was an airplane crew chief in the 812th Bombardment Squadron from 1940-45.

Mr. Evancho moved to California in 1949. While there, he sold tools, worked as a graphic artist for a sign company and for Lockheed in aircraft maintenance.

In 1964, he and his wife moved to Sedona, Ariz., where he worked as a facilities manager for Valley Verde Private School. He retired from that job before moving to Sequim in 1996.

He loved all music, art and dancing. He organized dances and booked musicians for entertainment at The Fifth Avenue Retirement Center. He also was instrumental in acquiring its art gallery. He loved collecting native artifacts in Sedona, Ariz.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sequim Post 4760.

He is survived by his nephew, Carmen Spagnola of California, and nieces Dawna Longley of Washington and Jeri Buttler of Nevada.
