Eduardo Galvan
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., for Sequim resident Eduardo Galvan, who died March 21, 2011, at the age of 84.
He was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Eduardo Galvan Gandarilla and Gertrudis Galvan Mendez.
His parents moved to Mexico when he was an infant and he was the only member of his family born in the United States.
He joined the United States Navy at age 17 in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He served aboard the Walter X. Young, a destroyer escort ship, as a radio operator. After studying electronics under the G.I. Bill, he worked at Dalmo Victor in San Carlos, Calif., and Gilfillan Brothers in Los Angeles before joining Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. in 1955 in Van Nuys, Calif. He left Lockheed in 1977. His final employment was with Watkins Johnson Corporation in San Jose, Calif., as a sales engineer.
He married Roberta Anne Eckert in May 1952 in Carmel, Calif. They moved from Santa Clara, Calif., to Sequim in 1990. Since 1995, he enjoyed sailing a radio controlled sailboat, “Poquito,” with the Sequim Aquanauts at Carrie Blake Park.
He is survived by his wife, Roberta; son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Mari Galvan; daughter Susan Galvan; six grandchildren; two-great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by brothers Rodolfo, Hector and Jorge.

 

 

Betty Richard
No service was reported for former Sequim resident Betty N. Howe Richard, who died March 21, 2011, at the age of 92.
She was born March 12, 1919, in Miles City, Mont., to Earl and Harrie Logan Howe.
In 1940, she married Maury Richard and they raised registered Herefords for 30 years on a ranch south of Miles City.  
In 1975, the Richards sold their ranch and moved to Sequim, where she was active in bridge clubs and community volunteer organizations. After her husband died in 1999, Betty joined with three friends to travel for several years  to various places along the West Coast, especially in Washington, Oregon and British Columbia.
She continued her travels with her son and daughter-in-law, who moved to Sequim in 2004 to be near her. The three of them moved back to Montana in 2009.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Jim and Barb Richard of White Sulphur Springs, Mont.; brother John Howe of Miles City; son-in-law Kurt Kosty; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara Ann Kosty in 1988 and sister, Pat.

 

 

June Stone Decker
A memorial will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Capitol Manor in Salem, Ore., for former Sequim resident June Stone Decker.
She died March 27, 2011, at the age of 87.
She was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Kansas City, Mo., to Stanley Stuart and Irene May Leming Stone.
She graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1940. Following graduation, she attended business college in Chicago, Ill., then worked at Crane Company in Chicago. There she met her husband, Howard Charles Decker and they married Oct. 24, 1942. He served in the United States Navy from 1942-1945.
She retired from a real estate career in 1983 and her husband retired from Northwestern University the same year.
The couple moved to Sequim in 1984. She was active in the Methodist church and a regular volunteer at the local visitor center. The couple moved to Canby, Ore., in 1998.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Howard and Amy Decker of Rochester, N.Y.; Bruce and LeeAnn Decker of Seattle; and Doug Decker of Portland, Ore., and Marie Mahon; daughter and son-in-law Bonnie and Roger Hull of Salem, Ore., and sister Patricia Miller of Powers Lake, Wis.; four grandchildren and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband in February 1999.

James Louis Cherny

A service was held for Sequim resident James Louis Cherny, who died March 17, 2011, at the age of 81.
He was born May 4, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., to James and Mildred Biering.
He served in the Army Paratroopers, Special Forces and married Alice Rita Cherny on May 29, 1948.
He was vice president of Electrographic Corporation; deputy commander, Navy Printing and Publications Service, Management Office, Washington, D.C.
He was awarded the highest civil service commendations from three different United States presidents.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Cherny; daughters Monica Wells and Teresa Finnen; three grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

 

 

Clifford H. Robinson
A memorial service was held for Sequim resident Clifford H. Robinson, who died March 28, 2011, at the age of 65.
He was born Jan. 11, 1946, in Bellingham, to Harvey E. and Miriam Alice Brown Robinson.

Charles ‘Norm’ Norman Scully
No service was reported for Sequim resident Charles “Norm” Norman Scully, who died Feb. 22, 2011, at the age of 94.
He was born April 20, 1916, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Edna Mae and Charles Norman Scully Sr.
Raised in Washington Crossing, Pa., he moved to California in 1933 to attend the California Institute of Technology, where he earned a master’s degree in chemistry.
He served in the Pacific Theater with the Marines during World War II, commanded an anti-aircraft battery on Eastern Island during the Battle of Midway and retired as a lieutenant colonel.
He spent many years working as an astrophysicist and optical laser engineer for North American Aviation, Rockwell and Rocketdyne. His contributions to science include micro-meteorite impact research for space vehicles, several contributions to the space shuttle program and mentoring future scientists in his community.
He married Marie Coletta on Feb. 13, 1955. She preceded him in death in 2004.
He is survived by his daughter, Lynanne White of Poulsbo; son-in-law Daniel White; half-brother Donald Scully of Sunrise, Fla.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Brian, in 1976.

 

 

Florence I. Loughrey
No services were reported for Sequim resident Florence I. Loughrey, who died March 31, 2011, at the age of 94.
She was born Oct. 6, 1916, to William and Isabell Pillar Loughrey.
She was raised and educated in San Francisco, Calif. She was a retired naval nurse. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews-in-law Georgia Dorsey of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Sheila and William Passot of Willows, Calif.; and Kathie and Kirby Munoz of Daly City, Calif.; seven great-grand-nephews and nieces; 10 great-great-grand nephews and nieces; and seven great-great-great-nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her sister Elizabeth Dorsey on Aug. 7, 2001.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Clallam County or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Sequim.

 

Barbara Collins

Barbara Collins, 99, passed away of age-related causes on March 9, 2011. She had resided for the past two years at Sherwood Assisted Living where she received loving, compassionate care.

Barbara was born in Los Angeles, California on August 26, 1911 to Walter H. Dorrance & Gertrude Johanna Dorrance (Van de Gorberg). She attended Glendale High School, Eagle Rock High School and Pasadena City College. She married Oliver H. Collins, a marriage that was to last nearly 60 years prior to his passing in November of 1992. Together they had two children.

Barbara had a deep faith in her Lord and Savior and, in her earlier years, taught Sunday School at Eagle Rock Baptist Church in the Los Angeles area. Upon moving to the San Gabriel Valley. She became a very active member of the Bethany Baptist Church of West Covina, California.

In mid-life, Barbara lost her eyesight. Despite being totally blind, she astounded family and all who knew her  by continuing to cook, do housework, and many other tasks - and doing them well.

Barbara moved to Sequim in 1997 and became a member of Sequim Community Church. She leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, Joanne & Joseph Arendt of Sequim., her son and daughter-in-law David & Cathy Collins of Sequim, her sister, Gerarda Fairburn of Burbank, CA, six grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and twenty six great-great-grandchildren.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law, Theodore & Ruth Dorrance, her brother-in-law, Robert Fairburn, and two great-grandsons, Nicholas Volentine and Johnathon Anderson.

There will be no memorial service in Sequim. However, on March 15, 2011 a grave-side time of remembrance with family was held prior to her internment alongside her husband at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills in Southern California.

 

Ralph Eugene Christensen
of Sequim, WA

Ralph passed away suddenly March 24, 2011. He was 81.
Ralph was born April 17, 1929, the youngest of five siblings, to Carl and Anna Christensen in the Danish community of Viborg, South Dakota.
Ralph moved to Washington in 1944, where he attended Roosevelt High School (Port Angeles High School). In his senior year, he was a member of the State High School Championship basketball team. After graduation he was drafted and served as a mechanic at Fort Lewis (WA) and Port Richard (AK).
After the service, Ralph married Shirley Schmuck of Sequim, in 1954. Together they made their home in Port Angeles, raising three daughters and one son. Both stayed very active in community service and the Clallam County Camp Fire Girls organization.
They remained on the family farm until Shirley’s death from cancer in 2000.
Ralph is survived by his sister Opal Larsen of Viborg, SD; daughters Theresa Bertelson (Woody) of Port Angeles; Jenny Taylor of Olympia; Pamela Christensen of  Rio Rocco, AZ and son Richard (Marta) of Beaver, WA. Ralph leaves 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his long time friend and companion Shari Bieker of Sequim.
Memorial service was held at 11:00 am, Friday, April 1, 2011, at the
Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, followed by a graveside service with
Military Honors at 1:00 pm at Mt. Angeles Memorial Park where he was
laid to rest next to Shirley.
