Edith Justeson Spellman-Soule
Justy Soule died January 28, 2013 at Bellevue Haven Adult Family Home after suffering for a number of years with Alzheimer’s. She was born 11th of 12 children in Gridley, CA on December 3, 1919.
In 1942, Justy entered the Army as a nurse. She served her country from 1942 to 1946, working as a surgical nurse throughout Europe, moving from major battle to major battle. As part of the first group to land on the beach on D-day, she slept in the open or on slopes just above the beach, helping save wounded soldiers. From there she moved to the area near Brest, where the fighting was constant. Next her evacuation hospital to which she was assigned moved towards Belgium, working just behind the lines, helping patients as they came in, evacuating as the hospital moved to the next battle, reorganizing and moving ahead again – over and over from battle to battle. She was promoted to Captain towards the end of World War II and earned a Bronze Star for her outstanding nursing efforts, of which she was very proud. It was while serving as a surgical nurse in Luxembourg that she met Dr. Bill Spellman, one of the surgeons she thought was especially nice. After the war she returned to her home in California where she and Dr. Spellman were married.
Bill and Justy moved to Longview, WA where they raised their two children, Craig and Marcia, and he opened his medical practice. A busy wife and mother, Justy was also was very involved in Girl Scouts of America, the Women’s Medical Auxliary, the Toutle River Thrift Shop Guild and various charities. Upon retirement, they moved to Sunland in Sequim. After 45 years of marriage, Dr. Spellman passed away in 1988. Justy then met and married Hardyn Soule. They continued to live in Sequim until Hardyn passed away in 2010.
Justy began her battle with Alzheimer’s in 2008, and her daughter moved her to Bellevue Haven Adult Family Home in 2010. She no longer was able to be the vibrant, funny friend, mother, fundraiser, charity organizer and board member she once was, but she made new friends in Bellevue Her final battle with Alzheimer’s ended January 28, 2013 as she slipped away peacefully at 11:50 pm.
Justy is survived by her son Craig Spellman of Midland, TX, daughter Marcia Remington and her husband Jim, of Renton, WA, sister Iva Johnson, California, brother Melvin Justeson, California, grandsons: Cort, Joseph, Brian, and Eric and granddaughter, Jamie and her husband, Joe.
