Swingle, Wolves shut down Seahawks

The Seahawks weren’t nearly as soft the second time around.

Peninsula led Sequim 1-0 for four innings until the Wolves’ bats woke up and Sequim pulled away with a 7-2 win on April 16 in Gig Harbor.

This, after Sequim clobbered Peninsula 13-2 in five innings earlier this season.

“We just came out really flat,” Sequim coach Mel Hendrickson said. “They played us tough.”

Fortunately for Sequim, pitcher Carly Swingle was tougher, striking out 10 Seahawks and walking none in seven innings. She finished the game with just 71 total pitches.

To fuel Sequim’s offense, Yolanda Chinn had two hits while Kathryn Roeber and Lea Hopson each had a triple. Maddy Zbaraschuk had a hit and two RBIs.

The Wolves scored two in the fifth, two in the sixth and broke it open with three runs in the seventh.

The strong showing from Peninsula didn’t surprise the Sequim coach, who figured the Olympic League would be tough all season long.

“I like that — it’s challenging to play every game,” Hendrickson said.

Sequim was scheduled to play at Klahowya April 21 and a make-up game at Olympic April 22 — results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves host Port Townsend April 24 and Port Angeles April 25.
